The Complete Cape Town Travel Guide

Everything you need to know about Africa's most beautiful city

By Claire B. Soares·5X Condé Nast Top Travel Specialist

Why Cape Town Is Africa's Most Beautiful City

Cape Town consistently ranks among the world's most beautiful cities, and it's easy to see why. Nestled between the dramatic flat-topped Table Mountain and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, the city offers a visual feast at every turn. But Cape Town's beauty goes beyond geography—it's a city of extraordinary cultural diversity, world-class cuisine, cutting-edge design, and a wine country that rivals Napa and Bordeaux.

As a 5X Condé Nast Top Travel Specialist who has led numerous groups through Cape Town, Claire B. Soares describes it simply: 'Cape Town is the city that has everything. Mountains, beaches, wine, history, art, food, nightlife—and all of it at an incredible value compared to European equivalents. It's the city I recommend to anyone who wants a complete luxury experience.'

For Black travelers, Cape Town also offers profound historical context. The District Six Museum, Robben Island, and Langa township tours provide windows into South Africa's apartheid history and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

Getting to Cape Town

Cape Town International Airport (CPT) receives direct flights from major European and Middle Eastern hubs, and connections from the US via Johannesburg (2-hour domestic flight), Dubai, or London. Flight time from the US East Coast is approximately 17-20 hours including connections.

We recommend flying into Johannesburg first for safari, then connecting to Cape Town—our South Africa Experience is designed around this logical flow.

From the airport, it's approximately 20 minutes to the V&A Waterfront area and 30 minutes to Camps Bay, depending on traffic. All our trips include private airport transfers.

Where to Stay in Cape Town

Cape Town's hotel scene is world-class and remarkably affordable compared to equivalent properties in Europe or the US:

The Silo Hotel — Cape Town's most iconic luxury hotel, housed in a converted grain silo above the Zeitz MOCAA museum. Floor-to-ceiling quilted glass windows offer extraordinary views of Table Mountain and the waterfront.

One&Only Cape Town — Our preferred property for group experiences. Located on the V&A Waterfront with Table Mountain views, world-class dining at Nobu, and a stunning resort pool.

Ellerman House — A boutique gem in Bantry Bay with just 13 rooms, a private art collection, and one of Cape Town's best wine cellars.

Camps Bay Retreats — For those who want beachfront luxury with the sound of the Atlantic as your soundtrack.

Table Mountain: The Icon

Table Mountain is Cape Town's crown jewel and one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. Rising 3,558 feet above the city, its flat-topped silhouette is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Africa.

Cable Car — The rotating cable car takes 5 minutes to reach the summit and offers 360-degree views of the city, ocean, and surrounding mountains. We arrange early morning or late afternoon rides to avoid peak crowds.

Hiking — For the adventurous, the Platteklip Gorge trail is the most direct route up (2-3 hours). India Venster offers a more scenic but challenging alternative. Always check weather conditions—the famous 'tablecloth' cloud can roll in quickly.

At the Top — Once on top, walking trails lead to various viewpoints. On clear days, you can see Robben Island, the Cape Peninsula, and even the distant Hottentots Holland Mountains.

The V&A Waterfront

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is Cape Town's premier dining, shopping, and entertainment district. Located in a working harbor with Table Mountain as a backdrop, it's consistently rated one of Africa's top tourist attractions.

Zeitz MOCAA — The Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is housed in a stunning converted grain silo and showcases the continent's most exciting contemporary artists.

Food Market — An indoor artisan food market with over 40 vendors selling everything from Cape Malay curry to artisanal gelato.

Two Oceans Aquarium — One of the best aquariums in Africa, featuring species from both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Sunset Cruises — Depart from the waterfront for catamaran cruises with champagne and Cape Town's glittering skyline.

Stellenbosch & the Winelands

The Cape Winelands, centered around the charming university town of Stellenbosch (30 minutes from Cape Town), produce some of the world's finest wines. South Africa's wine industry dates back to 1659, and the region's unique terroir produces distinctive Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, and award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon.

Top Estates to Visit:

Delaire Graff Estate — Owned by luxury jeweler Laurence Graff, this stunning estate offers exceptional wines, contemporary art, and a restaurant with panoramic mountain views.

Groot Constantia — Founded in 1685, it's the oldest wine estate in South Africa with a beautiful manor house and top-rated Sauvignon Blanc.

Jordaan Restaurant at Stellenbosch — One of the Winelands' finest dining experiences, pairing local wines with innovative South African cuisine.

Franschhoek — The 'French Corner' of the Winelands, established by French Huguenot settlers. Its Tram Wine Tour connects top estates via a vintage tram system.

Camps Bay & the Atlantic Seaboard

Camps Bay is Cape Town's most glamorous beach neighborhood—a crescent of white sand backed by the Twelve Apostles mountain range. The palm-lined promenade is flanked by restaurants, cocktail bars, and boutiques.

The Beach — Camps Bay beach is stunning but cold (Atlantic waters average 60°F). It's more about the scene and the sunset views than swimming.

Sunset Cocktails — Grab a table at Chinchilla, Cafe Caprice, or The Bungalow for what might be the world's most spectacular sundowner setting.

Clifton Beaches — Just north of Camps Bay, these four sheltered coves offer calmer waters and more privacy. Fourth Beach is the most popular.

Cultural Experiences Not to Miss

Bo-Kaap — This vibrant neighborhood of colorful houses was historically home to Cape Town's Muslim community. Walking tours, Cape Malay cooking classes, and visits to the Bo-Kaap Museum reveal the area's rich cultural heritage.

District Six Museum — A powerful museum documenting the forced removal of 60,000 residents during apartheid. Former residents serve as guides, sharing personal stories of loss and resilience.

Langa Township Tour — One of Cape Town's oldest townships, offering guided cultural tours that include community interaction, local cuisine, and live music.

Robben Island — A UNESCO World Heritage Site where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Former political prisoners guide the tours, sharing firsthand accounts of resistance and hope.
